Summers in the CSDC Garden
It is that time of the year when planning for our garden has already begun. We are excited to announce a new collaboration with the Strafford County Master Gardeners to create a Master Gardener in Residence program. Master Gardener, Jacqueline Bruhn, has been working with us for the past month to create an intentional plan that will bring together children, staff, and families in the CSDC garden each week to focus on a concept within the garden, inclusive of educational components for staff and families.
The goal is that on Wednesday mornings children will meet in the garden at 8:00-10:00AM for a collaborative experience (community sing, yoga, storytelling, etc.) and then spend time engaged with the Master Gardeners that will be visiting us. We will also offer one Wednesday afternoon a month from 3:30-5:00PM. All families are welcomed and encouraged to join us for these experiences.
Our tentative monthly focus will be as follows:
May – Seed Starting (join our Master Gardeners and seed start in small containers that you can bring home; May 11th & 25th 8:00-10:00AM and May 18th 3:30-5:00)
June – Planting seeds and seedlings (June 1st & 8th 8:00-10:00AM and June 15th 3:30-5:00; remaining times for Wednesdays in June TBA)
July – Home composting & worm composting (Wednesdays during the month 8:00-10:00AM, PM session 3:30-5:00 date TBA)
August – Safely managing pests and diseases (Wednesdays during the month 8:00-10:00AM, PM session 3:30-5:00 date TBA)
September – Season extension & dividing perennials (Wednesdays during the month 8:00-10:00AM, PM session 3:30-5:00 date TBA)
October – Seed saving & putting your garden to bed (Wednesdays during the month 8:00-10:00AM, PM session 3:30-5:00 date TBA)
