HMP Student Heading Abroad On Summer Gilman Scholarship
Sierra Moore is heading abroad this summer after receiving a scholarship through the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.
Sierra Moore, a sophomore who is majoring in health management and policy, will be traveling to Costa Rica through the San Joaquin de Flores Program run by the College of Liberal Arts. Sierra received $3,000 to support their study abroad experiences.
The Gilman program aims to increase the number and diversity of students who study abroad. Many Gilman recipients have never traveled abroad before and may not otherwise have the opportunity. Sierra Moore is one of them. “I have never been outside of the country, not even to Canada (and I live in Maine),” she wrote in her application. But that is about to change. Moore will spend six weeks in Costa Rica this summer, studying Spanish and taking classes at the local college to extend her vocabulary. “Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to study abroad and fulfill my dreams of traveling and gaining the firsthand experience with Spanish,” she says.
