Summer clinical experiences/graduating 'early'

Beginning in 2011 students will be allowed to register for, and complete, a section of KIN 665, Lab Practicum in Athletic Training, during the summer session.

Students who will benefit the most from this opportunity would be those who enter the major as juniors (‘Junior-entry’), thus requiring them to stay at UNH for the ‘extra’ fall semester beyond their typical four years at UNH. The ‘Junior-entry’ student could register for KIN 665 between their 1st & 2nd years in the major OR after their 2nd year in the major. A suggested course sequencing, of major classes ONLY, for the ‘Junior-entry’ student would be as follows:

Fall Semester Spring Semester Summer Semester
1st year KIN 658/658L (5 cr.) KIN 652/653A (5 cr.) KIN 665C (2 cr.)
  KIN 662/663 (5 cr.) KIN 659/659L (5 cr.)
  KIN 665A (2 cr.) KIN 660/661 (5 cr.)
  KIN 620 (4 cr.) KIN 665B (2 cr.)

2nd year KIN 620 (4 cr.) KIN 670 (4 cr.) KIN 718 (4 cr.)
  KIN 667 (2 cr.) KIN 715 (4 cr.) KIN 665E (2 cr.)
  KIN 710 (4 cr.) KIN 665D or E (2 cr.)
  KIN 780 (4 cr.)
  KIN 665C or D (2 cr.)
  • The ONE CONSTANT for the ‘Junior-entry’ student attempting to ‘shorten’ their time at UNH is they would have to register for and take KIN 718 during the summer session at the end of their 2nd year in the program – there is NO ALTERNATIVE TO THIS!
    • It costs LESS to take KIN 665 and/or KIN 718 during a summer session than to take the same number of credits in a fall or spring semester.
  • The VARIABLE is that the ‘Junior-entry’ student could complete a clinical experience during either summer following their 1st year in the major.
  • The date of graduation for the ‘Junior-entry’ student would be the end of the summer session (~Aug. 31/Sept 1) – this would have implications on when your BOC Certification and state licensure would be active – talk to Dan or Erik about these implications.
  • ‘Junior-entry’ STUDENTS WHO DESIRE TO SHORTEN THEIR PROGRAM AT UNH TO GRADUATE IN FOUR YEARS + ONE SUMMER SESSION WILL BE GIVEN FIRST PRIORITY TO REGISTER FOR AND PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER CLINICAL EXPERIENCES

Students who enter the major as sophomores (‘Sophomore-entry’) may elect to register for a section of KIN 665 during a summer session. Assuming the student completes their Gen Ed/Discovery course requirements, this could allow a ‘Sophomore-entry’ student to graduate a semester ‘early’ (at the end of the Fall Semester of their Senior year).

  • ‘Sophomore-entry’ students pursuing this plan would take their major classes on the same sequence as other members of their class.
  • The ‘Sophomore-entry’ student could register for KIN 665 between their 1st & 2nd years in the major OR after their 2nd year in the major.
  • ‘Sophomore-entry’ students who desire to register for KIN 665 during the summer would ONLY be allowed to do so if there were spaces available AFTER all ‘Junior-entry’ students had decided to register for (or not) a summer clinical experience.

2 types of experiences will be offered:

Session I

Start at beginning of summer session (Monday following May graduation date) – end July ~22 for 8 weeks. Participate in either:

1) Two rotations:

  • Begin experience at a local high school and continue there until the school year ends (~early/mid-June). Participation in Version I WILL NOT FULFILL a student’s high school clinical experience requirement
  • After high school ends, begin at either:
    • Seacoast Center for Athletes (aka Rehab 3)
    • UNH Athletics (mid-afternoon – early evening rehab and summer conditioning)
      • Possible participation in UNH Summer Sport Camp(s) (see more on this at end of document

2) Complete entire experience at SCFA and/or with UNH Athletics

Session II

1) Start ~July 25 – end last day of summer session (~Aug. 26/28) for 6 weeks.

2) Begin experience with either:

  • Seacoast Center for Athletes (aka Rehab 3)
  • UNH Athletics (mid-afternoon – early evening rehab and summer conditioning)
    • Possible participation in UNH Summer Sport Camp(s) (see more on this at end of document)

3) In early August, continue experience at local high school for ENTIRE pre-season sports season.

  • Participation in Session II WILL FULFILL a student’s high school clinical experience requirement

Summer sports camps at UNH

1) Students will ONLY be allowed to gain experience at a maximum of 2 summer camps as part of their overall clinical experience.

2) Students would apply for summer camps just like any other student (contact the appropriate UNH Athletic Trainer in charge of Summer Sport Camp assignments, at this time it is Barbara Hemphill, for application process).

  • Students participating in KIN 665 for the summer would not be given any special priority over any other student desiring to work a summer camp.

  • Students would get paid for their camp work commensurate to pay for any other student.

Beginning in 2012 students will be allowed to register for, and complete, KIN 718: Career Preparations in Athletic Training, during the summer session.

Students who will benefit the most from this opportunity would be those who enter the major as juniors (‘Junior-entry’), thus requiring them to stay at UNH for the ‘extra’ fall semester beyond their typical four years at UNH. By taking KIN 718 in the summer following their 4th year, they would be able to graduate at the end of August of that year instead of graduating in December of that year. This is also a significant cost savings. Students in this situation can ONLY take KIN 718 in the summer after they have completed ALL other major requirements (i.e., at least 4 semesters already completed in the major and all AT courses completed). In nearly all circumstances this would also mean that the student had taken, or plans to take, a summer clinical experience and that all other major and university requirements were completed. For example, KIN 780: Psychological Factors of Sport, is only offered in the Fall semester. Students in this situation would need to ensure that they have already taken this, and any other required, course in the appropriate semester to take advantage of the opportunity.

*Please recognize that while it allows you to graduate nearly 4 months ahead of the normal track for ‘Junior-entry’ level students, you may still NOT be in a position to gain acceptance into a graduate program, graduate assistantship, and some athletic training jobs, that would start in the Fall. This is because summer graduation is officially not until the very end of August, or the first days of September, regardless of when KIN 718 is offered and completed. Since graduation is not until the end of August, this carries implications for final BOC certification status and state licensure applications, hence, the ability to work as an athletic trainer.

Also recognize that there are no set dates that KIN 718 will be offered in the summer. It could be offered at any time. AT faculty will begin to determine during the preceding academic when it is most advantageous to offer KIN 718, based on student needs, faculty availability, dates for the NATA Annual Meeting, etc.
