Professor Jenkins Tucker Publishes Commentary
Dr. Corinna Jenkins Tucker, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, and Dr. David Finkelhor, Professor of Sociology and Director of the UNH Crimes against Children Research Center (first author), have published a commentary in The Lancet Psychiatry, a specialty journal from The Lancet, one of the world's oldest and best known general medical journals. The Lancet Psychiatry fast tracks peer-reviewed research papers on topics such as psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and psychosocial approaches to psychiatric disorders across the lifespan.
Finkelhor and Jenkins Tucker were asked to comment on a study addressing the effects of bullying that appears in the same issue of the journal. The study, conducted using two longitudinal data sets collected in the United States and the United Kingdom, reports children who are bullied by young peers are at greater risk of mental health problems in later life than those who are maltreated by adults. In their commentary, Finkelhor and Jenkins Tucker argue that the current response to child maltreatment, abuse, and bullying is inadequate because it is fragmented. They call for child protection lobbies to join forces, noting, “This new study illustrates the growing consensus that children are entitled to grow up free from violence, denigration and non-consented sexual activity at the hands of both adults and young peers.” The commentary also includes a critique of the study’s methodological weaknesses and notes that some of the findings are in direct contrast to previous studies of maltreatment.
Dr. Jenkins Tucker, who received her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University, joined the UNH Department of Human Development and Family Studies in 2000. She currently teaches courses in family relations and parenting, and her research includes children’s, adolescents’, and emerging adults’ parent, child, and sibling relationships; contextual parental and sibling influences on individual development; and parenting.
