OT Professor’s Assistive Technology Solution Recognized by President Barack Obama
This past spring, Dr. Therese Willkomm and her Assistive Technology class made national newsfor using recycled campaign signs to design assistive technology devices for people withdisabilities. One of the devices created is the Obama-Lean. The Obama-Lean is a portablecollapsible device for leaning or holding a book in an upright position for people who experiencelow vision. Over the summer Dr. Willkomm was invited by President Barack Obama to visit theWhite House to present this device. The Obama-Lean is just one of over 101 assistive technologysolutions that can be made from corrugated plastics. As part of their Assistive Technology class,OT students create a variety of devices to support individuals with disabilities at home, school,work and play.
