Carter Bascom: RMP Alumni
What made you decide to enroll in the RMP Program at UNH?
I decided to enroll in the RMP Program at UNH because I had some close friends of mine join the program. I had heard much positive feedback about the program and the faculty. Ultimately, my involvement with extra-curricular activities, in groups such as the Student Committee On Popular Entertainment (S.C.O.P.E.), and my passion for the outdoors and recreation lead me to the wonderful time spent in the RMP department.
Describe your most memorable experience in studying at UNH.
My most memorable experience at UNH would have to be meeting the amazing friends that I will be in touch with for the rest of my life. I think that the connections I have made at UNH will stay with me far beyond graduation.
Explain what you do now in the professional world.
I am the Program and Special Events Director for the New London Outing Club, in New London, NH. My job consists of facility management, program management, and administrative management. I manage the daily operations of the Outing Club Indoor Center, coordinate programs and activities with Program Directors, and report to a Board of Directors once a month.
What do you do for fun?
I enjoy hiking year round in the White Mountain National Forest, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hanging out with friends, swimming, running, playing Frisbee, playing tennis, golfing, reading, and traveling!
How has the UNH Recreation Management and Policy Dept. prepared you for your career?
The UNH RMP Dept. has challenged my thinking, provided me with numerous real-world experiences directly related to the recreation field, and helped me grow as a young professional. The faculty and staff in the department have shared their experiences, stories and were personable and relatable to me as a student. The guidance of my faculty advisor and the other faculty and staff members were very individualized and accommodating.
Why would you recommend UNH to people looking for a career in RMP?
I would strongly recommend UNH to people looking for a career in RMP because the program is unique to most other programs. You are required, as a student, to participate in a practicum and an internship experience as a capstone experience. The RMP faculty will work with you to create an academic plan to meet your needs.
