Pursuing a Career to Make a Difference
What made you decide to enroll in Therapeutic Recreation with RMP at UNH?
I attended Suffolk University for a year in Boston, MA. Not really sure what I wanted to study, I took some general classes. After my first semesterI knew I wanted to transfer. I knew I wanted to pursue a career working with people with disabilities. While looking into other schools and programs, I stumbled upon Recreation Management and Policy at UNH, specifically the TR option. I knew that this is the field I wanted to pursue. I love that this major gives me such a wide range of options in the healthcare field!
Describe your most memorable experience as a student of the RMP Dept.
One of my most memorable moments was when I told my advisor, Jennifer Frye, that I was offered an internship position at my top choice, Boston Children's Hospital. Jen gave me the biggest hug and was as excited and relieved as I was! This was one of the many times where my professors have gone above and beyond their jobs. In the RMP department, the professors are more than just teachers; they are some of the biggest allies and support systems I have formed during my academic career at UNH.
What are your future career plans?
I am graduating this May. I love travel and just recently came back from a medical brigade in Nicaragua. Before finding a job, I would love to do another medical trip over seas. After that, I hope to find a job in the field and work for a year or two. Eventually I think I would like to go back to school and receive my masters.
Explain some of your favorite aspects of our program.
There are so many aspects of the RMP program that I love. Our professors teach us with a variety of learning styles such as: group work, lab placements, experimentation and individual work. I have found during my internship experience that this variety of learning styles is essential when working in the real world alongside a team of professionals. Additionally, the RMP program is a community. The professors and students are some of the most creative, intelligent, and inspiring people I have ever met. There is always a helping hand with new and innovative ideas when you need one!
Why would you recommend this program to future students?
If you want to help others find meaning and passion in life, and have fun while doing so; this is the major for you! You’ll never work a day in your life if you love what you do! Find something that you’re passionate about and run with it!
