The University of New Hampshire participates in the New England Board of Higher Education's New England Regional Student Program (NERSP) where New England public universities and colleges offer a number of undergraduate curricula with reduced tuition to students from other New England states.

New England residents admitted to participating programs pay the UNH in-state tuition plus seventy-five percent. If you change your major to a non-participating major prior to receiving your degree, you will be required to pay the regular out-of-state tuition for the remainder of your time at UNH. The NERSP tuition rate is subject to change at any time, as is the list of approved UNH programs.
Please note that it is the university’s policy to not award both a merit scholarship and the tuition-discount available through NERSP; students may receive one or the other, but not both. Our practice is to award the student the award (either the merit scholarships or the tuition-discount associated with the NERSP) that provides the greatest cost reduction for the student. For fall 2010, the NERSP offers a greater cost reduction than that represented by the Dean’s Scholarship; for students awarded the Presidential Scholarship, it is in their best financial interest to receive the merit scholarship rather than the NERSP since the Presidential Scholarship has a larger dollar value than that of the NERSP tuition reduction. This decision reflects the institution’s commitment to prudently manage its fiscal resources.
In many financial aid packages the NERSP tuition discount results in a greater cost reduction (as reflected in the student's financial aid award) than the Dean's Scholarship. Students have the option to choose a financial aid package that has the NERSP tuition discount or the merit scholarship awards. Please contact the financial aid office to determine whether the NERSP tuition discount or merit scholarship will provide a more advantageous financial aid package. Also, when considering changing a major to or from an NERSP approved major please contact the financial aid office concerning possible changes in need based financial aid.
Some students receiving the NERSP discount (but not a merit scholarship) find that the impact of lower costs (as represented by the NERSP) has a greater impact on their need-based financial aid package than anticipated, leading the student to question whether receiving the NERSP tuition discount is in their best financial interest. Students have the option to choose a financial aid package that reflects the NERSP tuition discount or the traditional non-resident tuition charges. Please contact financial aid to determine whether the NERSP or traditional non-resident tuition charges will provide a more advantageous financial aid package to the student. Also, when considering changing a major to or from a NERSP-approved major please contact the financial aid office concerning possible changes in the need based financial aid.
