Certification by the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy

Graduates from the University of New Hampshire accredited  Occupational Therapy Program, are eligible to sit for National Certification to practice as an Occupational Therapist. The certification examination is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). Successful completion of this examination entitles an individual to practice as a certified occupational therapist (OTR). In addition to NBCOT certification, licensure is required in most States. A passing grade on the NBCOT certification examination is a prerequisite for state licensure.

Candidates who have not attained certification within 5 years of their graduation date will be required to demonstrate that they have satisfied the eligibility criteria at the time of their application in order to apply for the certification examination. As educational and certification standards evolve, these candidates may be required to complete additional coursework to satisfy current standards. This requirement applies to candidates graduating in 2016 and beyond.
