Honors in Major

Students with an overall 3.40 grade-point average and a 3.75 in major course work at the close of sophomore nursing program or are part of the University Honors Program are invited into the Honors-in-Major Program beginning first semester junior year.   Students are required to maintain an overall 3.40 grade-point average.  Students may remain in Honors-in-Major Program even though major GPA falls below 3.75.

Undergraduate students must successfully complete with a grade of B or better 12 credits of honor's coursework drawn from the following courses: NURS 612H, Care of the Adult with Acute Illness 2 (4 cr.); NURS 627WH, Clinical Judgment in Nursing (4 cr.); and NURS 705H, Contemporary Leadership within Health Care Systems (4 cr.).  NURS 641H, Translating Research for Practice (4 cr.), is required and is included in the 12 credit rule.

Students must successfully complete with a grade of B or better NURS 794, Special Topics: Honors Seminar, (1 cr.) second semester junior year; NURS 797, Honors Thesis, (1 cr.) first semester senior year; and NURS 797, Honors Thesis, (4 cr.) second semester senior year. These courses, self-directed learning experiences related to the student’s interests, are designed to help students acquire advanced knowledge and skills to undertake research or scholarly projects. Students must submit a project description to a faculty adviser at the beginning of the senior year. Students present the results of this study at the Ann Manchester Kelley Nursing Inquiry Day attended by the department faculty, students, and other interested members of the nursing community.

Students who meet the requirements for honors work in major are entitled to graduate with Honors in Nursing on their diploma and academic record.
