Find out what makes the Sport Management and Leadership major at UNH a great choice

Introduction

I'm Gretchen Brown. I'm the Program Coordinator for Sport Management and Leadership, and I coordinate internships.

What can you do with this degree after school?

Our students go on from UNH, and they are doing everything from athletic administration to marketing promotions to coaching, and they are doing things in ticketing as well as media and social media management. So we have just a wide variety of professions that our students can go into.

What makes experiential learning unique at UNH?

The experiential learning at UNH is very unique. We're unique because we have a mid-major Division 1 athletic program. I think that the partnership that we have with Athletics is tremendous. It works well for them, they certainly can use the added support, but you know it's a game changer for our students. We have students taking on leadership roles that they might not get in other programs, and by having that opportunity, not only are they building their network and their resume, they are getting the skillset they need to be successful, and it really allows us to put what we learn in the classroom in action right away. That experiential learning piece, I can't say enough about. It's a great opportunity for them.

Besides on campus, what other hands-on experience can students receive?

Because of our location in Durham, New Hampshire, we are within reach of many semi-pro sport opportunities with club sports. Various opportunities throughout the state and in Massachusetts and Maine. We're also in close enough proximity where if students are interested in having opportunities with the Celtics, the Bruins, the Patriots, or the Red Sox, they certainly are within reach as well. A lot of our students are working with local high schools and are working with the athletic directors, and so they're able to keep the athletic directors up to date with the latest techniques and latest technology, and so they're making a difference in athletic departments throughout the state.
