CHHS Student Scholarships and Awards

Each spring, the College of Health and Human Services recognizes excellence among our undergraduate and graduate students through scholarships and awards. These scholarships and awards are made possible through generous donations and gifts from supporters of UNH and CHHS.

CHHS College-Wide Scholarships and Awards

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide meritorious support to students in CHHS who plan to work with children. Recipients must be in their sophomore or junior year and have a minimum GPA of a 3.20. Preference given to students in Health Management and Policy, Human Development and Family Studies, and Social Work with a clear description of future plans to work with children and students who demonstrate a commitment to community service.

The Behavioral Health Scholarship Program is a partnership between UNH and Network4Health, which is an organization of over 40 partners in the greater Manchester area that are working together to improve overall health and wellness in the community.  The purpose of this scholarship is to increase the behavioral health workforce in areas of critical shortage in New Hampshire and enhancing awareness of careers in human services and behavioral health fields. Recipients must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students in a field of study focused on behavioral healthcare and from the following New Hampshire communities: Atkinson, Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Chester, Danville, Deerfield, Derry, Goffstown, Hampstead, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, New Boston, Plaistow, Salem, Sandown, Windham. 

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide meritorious support to undergraduate students in CHHS who best represent the bringing together of the health and human services mission of the College. Recipients should be in their sophomore or junior year and have a minimum GPA of a 3.20.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to CHHS students from New Hampshire who have demonstrated their intent to work to support mental health. Recipients must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students, from New Hampshire, and have a minimum GPA of 3.20. Preference given to undergraduate students, though graduate students will be considered, with a clear description of future plans to work in the area of mental health/illness.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs- and merit-based support to graduate students in CHHS with a preference given for graduate students with an academic interest in health analytics and health data science. Recipients must be continuing graduate students and have financial need. Preference given to graduate students studying in the areas of health analytics and health data science. Application requires: 1-page essay explaining fit with the award criteria.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to CHHS students who advance the university's goal of enhancing all educational experience through enrollment of a diverse student body. Recipients must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students and have a minimum GPA of 3.20. Preference given to undergraduate students, though graduate students will be considered.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to undergraduate students enrolled in CHHS who are pursuing a career in healthcare or medicine. Recipients must be continuing juniors or seniors and have financial need. Preference given to students with clear plans to pursue a career in medicine or a health-related field.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to undergraduate CHHS students that have demonstrated academic excellence in a health-related field of study. Recipients must be in their sophomore or junior year and have a minimum GPA of a 3.20. Preference given to students with clear plans to pursue a career in medicine or a health-related field.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for students in CHHS pursuing a health-related field of study. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of a 3.20.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs-based support to undergraduate students enrolled in CHHS whose education will allow them to positively contribute to patients’ hope and strength in their future careers and to spread the message and work of the Hope Strengthens Foundation. The spirit of this scholarship is rooted in the belief that graduates from CHHS will have countless opportunities to positively contribute to their patients’ hope and strength, while being productive members of the communities in which they work and live. Recipients must be in their sophomore or junior year and have financial need. Preference given to first in their family college students.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs-based support for undergraduate and graduate students in CHHS or the UNH School of Law with interest in leadership and engagement in health system reform, health law, population and public health, or long-term care and aging. Recipients must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students, have a minimum GPA of a 3.00, and have financial need. Preference given to students with demonstrated interest in leadership and engagement in health system reform, health law, population and public health, or long-term care and aging. Selected in consultation with the Institute on Health Policy and Practice.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to graduate students enrolled in the College of Health and Human Services. Recipients must be continuing graduate students. Preference given to graduate students that have a career focus on healthcare quality improvement. Application requires: 1-page essay explaining fit with the award criteria.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to undergraduate and graduate students in CHHS (certain circumstances may allow student recipients from a major outside of the CHHS) who have a deep and demonstrated commitment to the prevention of sexual and relationship violence and stalking. Recipients must be continuing undergraduate or graduate students and have a minimum GPA of a 3.00. Preference given to CHHS students who are engaged with UNH’s Prevention Innovations Research Center, or a national research organization focused on these issues, volunteering for local organizations that assist victims of sexual and relationship violence and stalking, or active members of a student group dedicated to the prevention of sexual relationship violence and stalking. Application requires: 1-page essay explaining fit with the award criteria and a letter of recommendation from a UNH faculty or staff member.

CHHS College-Wide Research and Service Awards

The Grimes Family Fund was established through the generosity of John A. "Jack" Grimes and Marianna Reardon Grimes. The purpose of the Grimes Family fund is to promote and honor research excellence in CHHS.

Grimes Research Competition
Participation in the Grimes Research Competition, an event that is part of the Undergraduate Research Conference (URC), is for undergraduate students in CHHS who are engaged in a scholarly project with a CHHS faculty mentor. The competition requires students to deliver a 10-minute oral presentation about their scholarly project. The presentations are judged by CHHS faculty and staff, and winners receive a cash prize. Calls for applications are shared each February.

Grimes II Award
The Grimes II Award promotes high quality undergraduate and graduate research by providing incentives to faculty and outstanding students who will mutually benefit from a collaborative research project. For the Grimes II Award, faculty-student teams are invited to submit a proposal. Calls for applications are shared each February.

The Theo-Steelman Public Service Fellowship was established to create opportunities for CHHS undergraduate and graduate students to gain either practical experience or research experience within a public service sector and focused on vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. Preference will be given to students who will complete a full-time summer service-learning experience and to those with financial need. Calls for applications are shared each February.

Scholarship Opportunities External to UNH but Relevant to CHHS Students

The purpose of this scholarship is to support New Hampshire residents with financial need who are studying nursing, medicine, social work, or other related areas and plan to work in New Hampshire upon degree completion. For more information, call 603-749-5535

The Foundation for Seacoast Health supports students enrolled in undergraduate (not limited to high school seniors) or graduate degree programs in a health-related field of study. The awards are based primarily on scholastic aptitude and performance, personal achievements, leadership, and community involvement. The applicant’s primary residence must be in one of the following towns: Portsmouth, Rye, New Castle, Greenland, Newington, and North Hampton, New Hampshire; Kittery, Elliot and York, Maine. The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation is committed to support New Hampshire’s most promising students with the greatest financial need. Scholarships are awarded to students for professional certificate programs, licensure, two- and four-year undergraduate degrees and graduate school. NHHEAF provides scholarships to support New Hampshire college students. Eligible to returning undergraduate students from New Hampshire (non-freshman) who exhibit a strong commitment to academics, engagement in their community, and a resilient character. Health Management and Policy

The purpose of this scholarship is to support students majoring in a health care-related field at UNH. Recipients must be full time undergraduate students with preference given to students from NH or VT with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in healthcare finance or healthcare administration.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide a minimum of two annual merit-based scholarships to undergraduate students. Preference given to students studying public health and to students with financial need.

Human Development and Family Studies

The purpose of this scholarship is to support undergraduate students in Human Development and Family Studies. Recipients must be in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year of their undergraduate studies in HDFS, first in their family to attend university, and have financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship, which was established through the generosity of Vergilia Paasche Dakin ’67, is to provide merit-based support for students majoring in HDFS and in the child development concentration. Recipients must have financial need.

Receive a full scholarship for a Master’s degree in Adapted Physical Education. This one-year program is focused on developing your skills to positively impact the health outcomes, physical well-being, and overall quality of life for children with disabilities.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for undergraduate students in the Health and Physical Education major in the department of Kinesiology. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for students enrolled in a major in Kinesiology who demonstrate academic excellence. Preference given to juniors and students with an interest in working with youth.

The purpose of this non-scholarship award is to support sophomore, junior, or senior Kinesiology students who are conducting research relevant to their field of study. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA or above.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to Kinesiology students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence. Preference given to students entering their junior or senior year and majoring in Exercise Science. 

The purpose of this non-scholarship award is to provide support for undergraduate students pursuing value-added opportunities that enhance their undergraduate experiences. Preference given to students entering their junior or senior year, majoring in a program in the Kinesiology department, and with demonstrated financial need.

Nursing

The four-year ANEW grant will provide traineeship awards to 21 nurse practitioner students annually. The program aims to expand programming and workforce development in communities with populations at risk for social determinants of health, reducing disparities to improve regional public health while working toward increasing student and faculty diversity. It will  address behavioral health issues and the opioid crisis as well as the shortage of providers caring for underserved and rural populations in New Hampshire. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support for continuing junior and senior nursing students enrolled in CHHS who are highly regarded, have strong interpersonal and clinical skills, and demonstrate respectfulness in practice. Preference is given to students from New Hampshire.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for Nursing students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate nursing program. Each year one award will be given to an undergraduate student and one award will be given to a graduate student. Recipients must be from New Hampshire and have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is support to undergraduate students enrolled in Nursing. Recipients must have high academic standing and financial need. Preference is given first to students from New Hampshire, then to residents from other New England states, and to students who have family members in the nursing or health care profession.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for New Hampshire residents pursuing a degree in Nursing. Preference given to students from Walpole, NH or Coos County, and to students considered non-traditional as indicated by having an independent status in their application for financial aid.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to undergraduate or graduate students pursing a Nursing degree. Preference given to students with a demonstrated interest in geriatrics and/or neurocognitive disorders.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to graduate students enrolled in CHHS with preference given to Nursing students enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing and the Family Nurse Practitioner programs.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to undergraduate students in Nursing with demonstrated financial needs.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs- and merit-based support for New Hampshire residents who are undergraduate students enrolled in the Nursing program.

Recipients must be from New Hampshire, be juniors or seniors, and have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to support Nursing students with demonstrated financial need.     

Occupational Therapy

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide merit-based support to undergraduate Occupational Therapy students who have been accepted into the UNH Occupational Therapy graduate program and who plan to start their graduate studies immediately after graduation. Preference given to students who have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to support senior or graduate-level Occupational Therapy students who embrace the values of compassion, acceptance, hard work, and giving to community. Recipients must be a junior, senior, or graduate student with demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for undergraduate and graduate students in Occupational Therapy. Recipients must be a junior, senior, or first-year graduate student from New Hampshire and with demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to students enrolled in Occupational Therapy. Awards will be merit-based with preference for students who best exemplify the characteristics of caring, concern for others, and commitment to the OT profession.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to graduate students in Occupational Therapy based on academic merit and financial need. Recipients must be a graduate student with demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for Occupational Therapy students.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for undergraduate students in Occupational Therapy who are engaged in research relevant to the field of Occupational Therapy.

The purpose of this scholarship is to support students with outstanding ability who are majoring in Occupational Therapy and have demonstrated financial need. Preference given first to sophomore students, then to junior students, then to continuing senior students.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to graduate students enrolled in Occupational Therapy.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs- and merit-based support to undergraduate or graduate students studying Social Work. Preference given to students with a demonstrated interest in working with older individuals. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and be junior or senior continuing undergraduates or in the MSW program.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for undergraduate students enrolled in Social Work who have demonstrated academic merit, financial need, and personal characteristics that reflect a dedication to the work in social services. Recipients must be undergraduate juniors or seniors who have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs-based support to students majoring in Social Work. Preference is given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students who have a demonstrated interest in international aspects of Social Work. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide needs- and merit-based support to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Social Work who are participating in international or domestic academic study and travel programs through UNH. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need.
