Meet an ACE Mentor
Aizlyn Alfonso, ACE Peer Mentor

Name: Aizlyn Alfonso
Hometown: Swanzey, NH
Major: Human Development and Family Studies/Educational Studies
Graduation Year: 2019

Why be an ACE Mentor? What attracted you towards the position?
I was nominated by my boss and I was eager to be a representative of my college and my specific major and serve my community. I love working with people, so it was very appealing to have my own group of students to work closely with each week.

Looking back on your time at UNH so far, what are you most proud of and why?
I am most proud of the high grades I have received while working an average of twenty hours per week since my freshman year and being a part of an a cappella group.

Let's talk favorites: do you have a favorite course and/or professor? Why is the course or faculty person so great?
My favorite course was HDFS 586: families at risk. I learned a lot about the unique situations and stressful events that families go through, and I believe that knowledge can be beneficial in any career working with people. We also took time to talk about how to manage our own stress. The class was so engaging and informative, and I loved the discussions we had!

What motivates you?
I am motivated by being a first-generation college student. I watched my mom struggle after my dad died, mainly due to not having a degree. She tried to go back to school, but it was difficult with three children and a full-time job. I am excited to show how hard I’ve worked to be the first in my family to finish college with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, even after the hardships I’ve had to face.

How is your experience at UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?
I have worked at the Child Study and Development Center since my freshman year, applying the skills I learned in class when working with the children. I feel confident interacting with families and working on behavior management strategies with children. I feel like the faculty here has worked really hard to make sure that I am ready to graduate and find a job.

What are you planning to do after graduation?
I am currently in the accelerated master’s program for Elementary Education, so after graduation I will be completing my master’s degree by completing a full-year full-time internship in an elementary classroom. Then hopefully I will find a job!

What do you love about UNH?
I love the location and how many free activities and resources are offered on campus (there’s something for everyone!). I also love the caring faculty, who has helped me be extremely successful.
