Helping people and solving problems
Heath Management and Policy major Grace Roy

Looking back on your time at UNH so far, what are you most proud of and why?

My time at UNH has helped me to develop not only professionally, but also personally. I am most proud of the internship that I completed in the summer of 2020 as a UNH Winant Fellowship Recipient at the Dover Coalition for Youth and Dover Youth to Youth, where I had the chance to work with multiple community coalitions and public health professionals across the country to help them develop the capacity to involve youth in substance use prevention work.

What motivates you?

I am motivated by the knowledge that I am gaining the knowledge and skills to enter a field of work where I can impact the health and well-being of many people and work to address inequities and conditions that contribute to poor health.

Why did you choose your major?

I chose Health Management and Policy because I have always had an interest in helping people and solving problems. I originally thought that I would carry out this mission through the biological sciences because I have always had a love for science and research. However, I eventually became interested in the field of public health because it incorporates a commitment to helping people and addressing injustices through the use of science, analysis, and policy.

What are you planning to do after graduation?

I plan to get my Masters in Public Health and hope to someday work in health policy analysis or public health program development and evaluation.

How is your experience at UNH preparing you to achieve your goals?

The classes that I have taken as an HMP major have provided me with a well-rounded set of skills that I will be able to use in my career. HMP provides a well-rounded perspective on the healthcare industry and has also helped me develop my leadership skills.

Any advice for students interested in your major?

My advice to students interested in HMP is to take advantage of every experience to learn more about different careers and opportunities because it will help you find your niche. There are so many different and fulfilling paths within healthcare that HMP majors can choose from. You will find your place!

Finally, tell us one reason you love UNH.

My UNH experience so far has provided me with so many different opportunities for growth and ways to pursue my interests. In particular, I have greatly enjoyed working as a Peer Educator with UNH Health and Wellness and singing with the New Hampshire Notables, UNH Concert Choir, and UNH Chamber Choir!
